Having grown up in the city of Detroit, Mrs. Newberry knows first-hand of the stuggles that youth face living in the inner city. She is a Detroit Public School graduate. Her drive to begin and build a community-based organization to address the needs of youth 5-18 enrolled in struggling schools and economically-challenged communities grew out of her own experiences, teaching in Detroit Public Schools and as a Director of Prevention Services at Alternatives For Girls. In 2005 she received the vision and in the midst of recovery from a life-threatening tragedy, she began to turn the vision into reality. Mrs. Newberry has also held leadership positions in various organizations and collaborations in the city, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, Yatooma's Foundation For The Kids and Transformation Detroit. She is a graduate of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and also has a graduate certificate from Central Michigan University. She includes among her honors and awards the Zwedi Youth Champion Award (2007) and the Bridge to the Future Award (2009), Community Connections Passion & Purpose Award (2011) and a Tesitmonial & Resolution from the Detroit City Council. Her most treasured pride and joy of this world are her three children La Tressa, Serena and Jamal II.
